NewsBusters.org Esposing liberal media bias (agree with us or else!)

Last political post for some time, I promise.

So I recently signed up for the twitter feed belonging to NewsBusters since I so enjoy hearing/reading the viewpoints of people I don't necessarily agree with. Their motto seems sincere enough. Just as there is conservative media bias there is definitely liberal media bias and I am not naive enough to believe that only one side is guilty.

It took less than a week to find out that this site is full of crap and needs a completely different site to try and capture all of the bias that they are guilty of.

Almost every story I read is basically a hack job attempt at spin to make liberals look as bad as possible. It's exactly the type of site that a bunch of amateur bloggers would come up with where everyone can agree with each other without fear of having someone disagree with them.

As my previous post would indicate I like perusing the message boards and so I took the time one day to register so that I could join the discussion. Knowing how touchy these places can be I phrased a very articulate reply asking a reasonable question with a firm belief that it wasn't so inflammatory as to get my comment deleted.

It took less than a day for my account to be banned completely. I thought this weird and maybe I didn't verify my account properly so I tried again only to see that my email address had been banned from the site. From that point, with open eyes, I started reading the comment sections on a few pages only to see that is was chock full of lib-hating people in all their glory with nary a lefty comment to be seen. Ah ha.

So feeling oppressed launched a google query asking about getting banned from Newsbusters only to see that this is apparently how they operate. A site claiming to look for media bias rejects any and all two-sided discussions. Does that seem wrong to anyone else?

Ultimately it's not a big deal. These people have a club and there ain't no libs allowed. No biggy. I just thought it odd that a site attempting to be fair would be so close minded. I'll just have to find another enemy battleground to encroach on.

Milk-a-what?

I hate to delve in to TMZ-ish type material but some days I just get in the blogging mood and just about everything seems like a good topic for me.

Poor Lindsay Lohan must be falling on hard times. She decided that the E-Trade commercial that aired during the superbowl was an attack on her and is now demanding $100 million from them. The reasons are: a) the baby is named "Lindsay" and b) she's a milkaholic. Therefore, they must be basing the character off of Lohan.

It's so absurd it is beyond understanding.

Listen, Lindsay. I know it must be difficult leading your lifestyle of having promiscuous sex with many anonymous partners without protection while at the same time experimenting with mind-expanding drugs in a consequence-free environment on nothing but the income earned from "I Know Who Killed Me" and the occasional obscure magazine shoot with "tasteful nudity", but this is a new low.

We're talking about a ton of cash for the usage of the name "Lindsay".

This is America, people. No lawsuit is too frivilous and your dignity can easily be turned in for cash. God bless the USA.

More Republican Hypocrisy

Hypocrisy, in addition to Jane's Addiction, is my obsession of the week, apparently. With the increasing communication between the President and the Republicans in Congress you are seeing a lot of shady behavior. The Republicans say how much they want to work with the President but tell their constituents that they are going to do whatever it takes to stop him. It's really odd to watch this behavior in a day and age where everything that is said can be captured and immediately put on the internet.

Rachel Maddow did a segment on the extremely unpopular stimulus bill recently and how Republicans are reflecting it's success (and failure) to the public. In this clip she shows the large number of politicians who stand on camera and declare the bill a failure, yet in their home town they are all too happy to present this money to the people as if it came from their own pocket.

It shouldn't be shocking, but it is. This is another reason why Obama needs to give up on the bipartisanship issue altogether.

Do Republicans have a monopoly on hypocrisy? Hell no. However, in my 30 years I haven't seen this level of hysterical rhetoric employed in bringing down a president since Newton Leroy Gingrich blew up the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal while he was cheating on his own wife.

I have come to the belief that, since the election of Obama, Boehner and McConnell have given no thought at all to working with Democrats. It has been their goal from the moment McCain conceded to tear down everything to get Republicans back in power.

And now for my other obsession!

I have also come to the belief that Dave Navarro does not own a single shirt.

Showdown in Baltimore: Obama vs "Jim"

Last week appeared to be a good one for the President. His State of the Union address went well, I believe. The entire concept is kind of silly, in my opinion, but I understand that it is just one of those things that we have to deal with. I'm most pleased with the fact that it didn't interfere with the season premier of Lost (back tomorrow baby!).

Back to the SOTU. Did you ever really notice how silly it is? The up and down of the VP and Speaker. The stony silence of the minority party. It's kind of funny.

Despite that, and within the context of the speech, though, I though Obama did alright. He is a charismatic speaker. He does well up there. I have to give him that. There was nothing in the speech that particularly blew me away, nor was there anything I took issue with. I would rather that he didn't mention the "inheritance" that the previous administration left him but he and his people seem to think it was necessary. It's at the point where the people who do not recognize that Obama was left with a mess are doing so of their own free will. It isn't for lack of information. Those who think Obama is responsible for all of the mess are doing it because they want. But that's their prerogative and they're going to do what they want to do.

The GOP response was laughable. Honestly, who designed the set? A black person behind McDonnell on one side and an Asian on the other. Christ almighty does it get any more transparent than that?

My favorite line was:

"We want cooperation, not partisanship."

Tell me, what about the actions of the minority party would indicate that they are interested in cooperation?

Tell me, when voting results in almost every single Republican voting the same way (that being against whatever Democrats are trying to do), how is that bipartisan?

Anyway, the biggest STFU moment of the entire event was Chris Matthews stating that he forgot Obama was black. What the hell does that mean? I'm not even sure what he was trying to say, but in the current political environment you need to be damn sure that what you are saying is not going to get you put through the grinder.

After the speech the news broke that the GDP had gone through a major uptick compared to the last year. This is kind of "so what" for me as a major increase after a an even bigger decrease is not so impressive as it sounds at first. However, we need all the good news we can get with the economy.

It would be nice if Obama's opponents would be as hysterical over the improvements in the GDP and the Dow as they were when these same economical indicators were sliding, but that would also mean there was an ounce of integrity in the political discussion these days, which I think we can all agree is not true.

In the grand scheme of things, the only thing that matters right now is unemployment. It would make no sense for businesses to start hiring before things stabilize, so it's understandable. However, positive signs are starting to appear, little by little. It would be perhaps too optimistic to think that unemployment will get back in the single digits during 2010. It's always faster to make a mess than it is to clean it up.

The last thing of note for the week that was: Obama's trip to Baltimore to take questions from the GDP. The idea itself, is great. Hopefully this is the start to a tradition of direct confrontation rather than speaking through twitter, politico, blogs, and whatever outlet our politicians can get their hands on.

If you don't think that Obama was impressive during that session, I would really need to hear why. He showed himself to be knowledgeable on just about everything that was thrown at him, and he certainly didn't take bullshit. At the same time, he was comfortable enough to be direct when necessary, and crack a joke afterwards.

The one thing I noticed him struggle on is trying to delicately explain to the GOP that Democrats were the majority party, and so Republican attitude that compromise means "their way or nothing gets done" is not an accurate representation of the democratic process. There were a lot more "mmmm"s and "ummm"s during that exchange. I can understand that since it should be common knowledge.

The biggest point Obama made is on the Republican attitude during Obama's administration. Obama has been demonized beyond the point of rational behavior. This tactic started before Obama stepped in to the White House as President. Everything he has done has been criticized as "ruining the country" and "government take over"; no matter how small the issue. To put it in numbers terms: Obama's actions have ranged from 0 to 100 on how far to the left, yet Republican response to these actions has consistently been in the 80-100 range in how they criticize them.

So, as Obama says, it does not leave the Republicans much room to work with the President when they go and tell their constituents how fucking awful Obama is. When faced with that level of opposition, how can they expect Obama to want to listen to them? What does he have to gain?

We're currently in a situation where health care reform is being compared to Nazi behavior. Why? Here's how it should have been played out. Democrats, with Obama in office and a super majority in Congress should have started off with a heavy effort on single payer, doing everything they could do get it. If they were faced with stiff opposition, then they should have conceded to go with public option, and nothing less.

Instead, the level of demonizing rhetoric has been consistent throughout the process from start to finish. How is that not obvious to every person in the country that all the GOP cared about was stopping any and all reform? There is no room to negotiate, because only one side cares about getting this done.

Now, when public opinion on HCR tanks, the GOP spins it as the nation not wanting it when it's obvious that now the left leaning are also voting against it because the legislation is a joke.

What should happen now is that the whole thing should go back to the drawing board where they can go back to square one, go for universal health care, and say fuck you to the GOP. But that won't happen. Why? Because the Democrats in Congress are pussies.

The final question of the session was a man who just spouted a bunch of Hannity & Rush b.s. I'm pretty sure I learned something about Obama right there. The thing that has driven me nuts about Barry is how he stays quiet on a number of heated issues. The answer should have been obvious: It's because he doesn't really dignify fringe accusations with an answer. I'd say good for him, but in many instances certain people treat silence the same as admission of guilt. However, saying "with all due respect, Jim" would have been much more sincere if his name had actually been Jim, instead of Jeb.

It was an interesting dialogue on Friday. I loved seeing the piss & vinegar back in Obama, as I have been getting rather disappointed in his lack of involvement. This was the Obama that people voted for. Hopefully, this means a change in attitude. If there is one thing he could learn from George W Bush, it is how to handle Congress. I need a shower after that statement.

Despite my optimism in all of this, I am remaining extremely reserved in my attitude going forward. I will definitely need to see Obama continue with the attitude he displayed. It's one thing to talk a big game, it's another altogether to put that in to action. This country needs leadership right now. In a time when the loudest mouths on the right appear to be Rush and Palin, it should not be hard to take control and move forward. The next three years will be a test for Obama, and I hope for his sake that he's up to the task.

Keep the squirrels out of it.

"His name is Twiggy the Squirrel, and he's three years old. How 'bout that? That squirrel can water-ski. Man, that's hilarious."

Today must be politics ranting Thursday. Maybe I'll try to limit my politics beef to Thursday, it might bring some organization to the mix. Anyway, I happen to live in the congressional district recently made famous by the likes of national heavyweights like Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin as they piped in on the election between Doug Hoffman and Bill Owens.

I've heard about hotly contested congressional seats before but this is the first time I have ever been at ground zero. My God was it annoying. There was non-stop commercials on tv, invasive phone calls, and radio commercials every 5 seconds. You have no idea how much I was praying for it to just come and go. But not even the actual election would make the drama disappear.

Nope, instead of nice neat landslide victory for Hoffman, as everyone was predicting, it had to be a close victory for Owens, the evil-liberal-socialist-Pelosi-Democrat (Hoffman's words, not mine). Hoffman ended up conceding and that should have been that.

But wait! Hold the phone, it turns out that as the straggling votes were being counted, it was actually much closer. In the days following the election, and with a few thousand absentee ballots to go through, there was still a glimmer of hope for Hoffman, the common-sense-conservative-Reagan-Republican (Hoffman's words, not mine). There was hope yet for Republicans to regain their 150 year strangle hold on upstate New York!

Hoffman has already proven to me to be a minor nuisance compared to the big guns in the country. He publicly complained about not being given questions far enough in advance, bitched constantly about socialism and Pelosi, and showed everyone that he knew nothing at all about the area. His interviews basically consisted of him repeating ad nauseum that he was a "common sense conservative", whatever the hell that means. I even witnessed him gushing on the Glenn Beck show how much he learns from him and essentially declared his love for Beck. In essence, he looked immature and inept, at best.

The election should have made him go away. However, the updated vote count kept him hanging around, and announced (On Beck's show) that he was un-conceded. That's fine. However, he decided to open his mouth again, and it is painfully apparent that he is extremely immature. He's now blaming the whole thing on ACORN. It's really embarrassing, and I feel bad for him. The ACORN thing is such an obvious grab for more donations. The likes of Beck and co have done such an amazing job building of the infamy of ACORN that conservatives everywhere have declared the organization as a sworn enemy.

The final count on this vote should have been completed on Monday. Hopefully this time it will end the issue, and I won't have to hear about the 23rd until... next year? Shit.

Update: Hoffman has given up on the election again and will not file any charges. Don't worry though, he will most likely return to the thick of the Upstate NY action next year for another edition of "Democrats, Chicago Politics, and ACORN.. Oh My!!!".

Support the troops!

The time is going by slower than molasses in January today. Most likely it's due to the fact that I am super stoked that tomorrow is Veterans Day and this guy doesn't have to go to work. Just thinking about it makes me giddy. I have absolutely no actual plans for the day off but all I know is that I don't have to do anything accounting related and that is pure awesomeness.

There are a number of reasons why working for a bank sucks but the fact that we get to observe all those sweet holidays is alright with me. So, my activities for tomorrow will be pretty much limited to the following:

  • Sleeping late (at least until 8)
  • Playing video games (I will finish Fallout 3)
  • Rocking out
  • Eating a calzone
  • Not showering
  • Watch a bunch of movies
That about sums it up. Maybe I could:

  • getting drunk
...as well. But after my Halloween, I'm kind of hesitant to be partaking in that particular activity for a little while.

I'm having a hard time deciding what movies to watch with my free day. I'd like to give the GI Joe film a shot. What guy my age wasn't a huge fan of Joe back in the day. Like most things I assume that the movie will fuck it all up. For Christ sake they have Sienna Miller in the movie!!! Name me any good movies at all that she's in. Or, for bonus points, just name any movies that she's been in.

Anyway, those are my aspirations in appreciation of the brave men and women who defend my freedom and ability to be a total lazy piece of shit.

Thank you, and God bless.

Adding insult to injury

Mios dios. I have to apologize on behalf of all of Redskins nation for the public being subject to the slow agonizing torture that is "Redskins being televised nationally". This game... was awful! The Redskins finally get a chance to play a team that has actually won a game and the promptly respond by turning the ball over 4 times. Four fucking times!!! Campbell was on the run the entire time. And by "on the run" I mean staring blankly at swarms of Eagles coming at him. That game was awful.

Readers of deadspin will know that Mr Daniel Snyder has been waging a personal battle against the fans. Why exactly is he drowning out the very same people who allow the team to function? Somewhere in the trail of links is a column by somebody at the Washington Post who states that a team spokesman released a statement saying that the behavior of these upset supporters are not representative of "real fans". How delusional is that? So, the only real fans are actually cheering for this team which has zero direction, even less talent, and no possibility of success this year? I find it awfully hard to believe that an uber-successful businessman like Snyder is so far removed from reality.

Unfortunately, this is old news. The real kick in the pants from Monday Night's embarrassment is that my boy, Chris Cooley, broke his ankle and could now be out for the season, at worst, or as little as 4 weeks, at best. Perhaps it's a blessing in disguise. The game, even as unwatchable as it was, had a couple of bright spots in that the young bucks Fred Davis and Devin Thomas actually got involved in the offense. Maybe losing his favorite target and getting new play calling from Sherman Lewis will force this offense to open it up and take some shots. At this point, the season is lost. What do they have to lose by venturing out of their comfort zone? Their offense is anemic and painful to watch. Let's at least give the loyal fans who are still paying money a good show. That's the least they can offer.

Unless of course "real fans" like Tom Cruise disagree.

There is a silver lining to it all of course. Just not for me, or you. What puts a smile on my face is that Chris Cooley will be in good hands as he is nursed back to health.

The definition of a "slump buster"

So yeah, Steve Phillips of ESPN and former NY Mets GM fame, has done got himself in to a dilly of a pickle. He went ahead and ended his marriage due to the sweet alluring charms of this ESPN employee:

Take a good look at that. This homely maiden is Brooke Hundley, a fellow ESPN employee whom Phillips thought was worth dipping his pen in the company ink. What in God's name made him think this was a good idea. He can no longer brag about being the guy to discover David Wright. This chick is now his crowning achievement.

Not only does she look like a dump truck, she's also completely out-of-her psychotic. She left a letter for Steve's wife, telling her how their catholic faith shouldn't get in the way of annulment because God wants everyone to be happy, and she also plowed her car in their house. Oh yeah, she also friended little Steve Jr on facebook and pretended to be a classmate or some other shit.

Way to go, Steve. Hopefully you get all of this straightened out during your "leave of absence".

Update: Phillips done got himself fired!!! Awww Nawww!!!

You stay classy

Joe Wilson is a douchebag.

Yeah, this guy

Not only was he a douchebag for heckling the Pres last night, some of his fellow Republicans think he's a douchebag as well. Sure, McCain doesn't actually say "Joe Wilson is a douchebag", but I'll just go ahead and say that's what he was really thinking.

But he's not the only douchebag. There were a number of Republicans that also joined in the douchebagery. There were two types: the ones who spent their time playing on cell phones and the ones waving around their bill. You know would happen if I was in a business meeting and I started playing with my phone? I'd get my ass handed to me. And as for the others, they look like the doofus who was waving around her birth certificate at the town hall meeting. You are now in the minority because the majority of USA voters thought you sucked. You should have come up with a meeting or two a couple years ago. So stop spouting to every media outlet you can find about how you know what the "American people" really want. If that was the case you wouldn't be staring at Nancy Pelosi hopping up to start the applause every 30 seconds.

That being said, good speech. I normally can't stand these things. This one I could actually handle. All I can say is Obama had better be ready to back up alot of his claims. There are two in particular that he best be bringing his A game. First, if he doesn't stay true to his claim about not signing any bill that doesn't have all the costs covered, this could be one of those signature administration wreckers along the lines of "No new taxes" and "I did not have sexual relations with that girl". Second, there was a lot of tough talk against the Republicans. They have been running roughshod all over him so far, and if it turns out that it was as all talk, then it's curtains for this guy. The USA citizens don't want to be run by a pussy. So man up and be true to your word, Barry. Your job is at stake.

edit: I forgot to mention that the illegal immigration issue has already been debunked.

"I threw a second punch and my fist ended up in his mouth"

I report, you decide. Neil Cavuto reports and tries his darndest to turn this guy in to a hero.

What do I think? Umm... a debate about healthcare should definitely NOT turn in to a punch and biting battle? Maybe?

Coming next week: Rush makes fun of Nancy Pelosi's "cooties"

Rush administered some uber-epic pwnage yesterday to openly gay Barney Frank (although I had no idea he was gay until yesterday). Once again there was a town hall scene where an ignorant young lady holding a picture of Obama (with Hitler-stache) asks Jewish Congressman Frank why he supports a "Nazi policy".

Do I approve of Frank's response? I'm not sure. I am all for a dignified discourse and taking the high road but at this point it seems like a certain segment of the anti-health care reform movement have no interest in educating themselves on facts and engaging in an intellectual debate. If he had seriously attempted to explain to this young woman would she have listened? She came to the meeting equipped with her picture and set of talking points and already had her mind made up that the reform is similar to Nazi policies. If you had spoken to me a week ago I probably would have had a bigger problem with Frank than with the woman. She obviously does not know better and is only interested in the hate agenda. He, as an elected representative, should know better. However, my mind is quickly changing.

The Democratic party is, as usual, turning in to a group of cowardly bitches who back down and try to appease the Republicans. We don't need them in order to pass this legislation and the Republicans are really making it an easy decision by not even pretending to be bipartisan. So why are the Democrats? Fuck the Reps, pass the bill, if that's what they really want. After 6 years of bully tactics under Bush you would think that the Democrats in Congress would be chomping at the bit to finally be relevant.

So, kudos to Frank for not even humoring her naivety. As time unfolds and we see that these "grassroots movements" are sponsored by insurance companies and are essentially an organized mob paid by them, it becomes more and more apparent that they are not interested in discussion. They are being deployed to prevent the discussion from even happening. So why humor them and give them relevancy? Tell them they're crazy. Do not dignify them with an explanation or a defense as to why health care reform has no similarities to the Nazis. If you need a reason why genocide has no resemblance to providing health care, then you are hopeless.

So this series of events evokes this mighty response by the GOP warlord:

That's right. A gay joke. Not only a gay joke, but a gay joke that would be more appropriate in middle school.

I am no fan of Barney Frank. The dude raked in serious cash and benefited from a sequence of events that resulted in the economy being in the state that it is in. He is not alone in this as many politicians also made some coin. However, I give him serious credit for his response to this new movement spreading among Republicans.

Idiot!

On another somewhat-related Palin note, I was going through some old magazines and came across the recent Time 100 Most Influential People issue and saw the entry for Sarah Palin, written by Ann Coulter.

I hate Ann Coulter. I don't even know her, but I know I hate her. She might be a delightful human being in person and it's just her on-TV persona which is a vile, nasty, hateful, little troll. Just the titles of her books are enough to make me want to slap her in the dick. There are only a handful of people in this world that I can seriously say would make the world a better place if they would go ahead and die, and she makes it on the short list.

Now that I've set that up properly I can go on. Her entry about Sarah Palin was innocent enough until she decides to take you for a trip down crazy person lane with this one: "Palin is a threat to liberals because she believes in God and country and family- all values liberal pretend to believe in but secretly detest".

What the fuck???

Bear in mind that Ann Coulter is credited with doing things like "exposing liberal hypocrisy" or being "refreshingly politically incorrect". One reviewer of her books says she is "intelligent, thoughtful, and articulate".

I just have a hard time deciding if she is serious or doing all of this as a ploy to get paid. I can't see how anyone who takes politics seriously and considers themselves a somewhat intelligent person can read that statement about Sarah Palin and liberals and think to themselves, "what an intelligent, thoughtful and articulate statement!".

Here's what's wrong with it:
  • Argument from fallacy
  • Bare assertion fallacy
  • Blanket statement
  • Argument from repetition
  • Generalization

Essentially, I am trying to use terms used in the proper art of debate to refute an asinine comment, which only begs the question:

Who's the bigger idiot, Ann or myself?

Have a good weekend. I'm hoping to get drunk. Slap hands!

Rozlúčiť, Hossa. We hardly knew Ye.

Well, that didn't take long. Hossa has come to the decision that the road to the Stanley Cup goes through Chicago. Or maybe he just decided that he'd like to lay in a big pile of money every night like Scrooge McDuck. Not only was he MIA during the playoffs, he immediately jumps ship from a perennial Stanley Cup threat despite stating his desire for a championship.

I guess I can't blame him. Sometimes it makes sense to get paid if you can't win it big and Chicago is a young up-and-coming team.

But Chicago has no excuse for locking the dude up for 12 years. He'll be in his 40s by the time he's done cashing in on this gig. Have fun with that one.

"I'll wait up in the dark/ For you to speak to me..."

Mornin! I'm trying to start the day off right despite another Yankees loss and my Red Wings running in to the wall known as Jonas Hiller. By the way, Niedermayer, you're a bitch. If you're going to go after Datsyuk (not exactly known as a bruiser), do it like a man instead of throwing a cheap elbow. I might be biased a bit but it looked to me like Anaheim decided that winning wasn't enough and needed to start scrapping with all of Detroit's best players. Not to mention the fact that they have been constantly crying to the refs. You stay classy, Ducks.

But I'm getting off point. So, on my hour long ride in to work I knew I was going to hear nothing but talk about Roger Clemens and the NBA, which I stopped paying attention to about 10 years ago. Luckily, I had Pearl Jam's reissue of Ten handy. I have mixed feelings about bands kicking out greatest hits and reissues and all that junk when they feel like making a buck. And lets be honest, the addition of this album to the collection for your average loyal Pearl Jam fan means that you now have about 50 versions of "Evenflow" to choose from on itunes. But you know what, I don't even care. The differences between this cd and the one that was released almost 20 years ago are subtle but it's still the kick ass collection of songs that can still get me amped all this time later. "Once" is just as a good an opening tune as it's always been and "Release" still brings it to the perfect close. And I don't care how many times I've heard "Evenflow". I will still mumble along with Eddie. Underrated "Deep" and "Garden" are still better than almost all the crap that passes for rock being released these days. They tack on some extras at the end of the cd, which is nice, but most of it seems like filler. They have live or demo versions of "Breath" and "State of Love and Trust" but neither are nearly as good as what you get listening to the Singles soundtrack. The best of the extras is probably "Brother" which adds vocals to what was a pretty nice instrumental song on Lost Dogs. Also, "2,000 Mile Blues" is a step out of the comfort zone, but seriously Eddie, you don't really have the pipes for a blues tune. McCready steals the show on that one.

All told, it's good enough to tide me over until their upcoming album and it also polishes up what was already one of the best albums ever released.

And Niedermayer is still a bitch.
